Hantavirus op een cruiseschip
Passagiers van een cruiseschip hebben een hantavirus uit Zuid-Amerika gekregen. Ook Nederlandse mensen. Deze soort van het hantavirus heet het Andesvirus.
Wat is het hantavirus?
Er zijn wel 60 soorten hantavirussen. In Nederland komt het virus niet veel voor.
Een hantavirus krijgen mensen meestal van ratten en muizen. Heel soms kunnen mensen elkaar besmetten, zoals bij het Andesvirus.
Soms erg ziek
Mensen kunnen van het Andesvirus lichte klachten krijgen. Die klachten lijken op griep.
Soms wordt iemand erg ziek van het Andesvirus. Bijvoorbeeld met hoge koorts. En problemen met hart of longen. Iemand kan dan overlijden.
Heel kleine kans op besmetting
De kans is heel klein om in Nederland het Andesvirus te krijgen. Want de rat die het virus kan hebben, komt alleen in Zuid-Amerika voor.
Alleen als je lang en dicht in de buurt bent van iemand met het Andes-virus, kun je misschien ziek worden.

Passengers on a cruise ship have contracted a hantavirus from South America. This includes Dutch passengers. This type of hantavirus is called the Andes virus.
What is hantavirus?
There are around 60 types of hantavirus. In the Netherlands, the virus is not very common.
People usually get hantavirus from rats and mice. Very rarely, people can infect each other, as is the case with the Andes virus.
Sometimes very serious
People infected with the Andes virus may experience mild symptoms. These symptoms can resemble the flu.
Sometimes, however, someone can become very ill from the Andes virus. For example, with a high fever or problems with the heart or lungs. In some cases, a person can die.
Very small chance of infection
The chance of contracting the Andes virus in the Netherlands is very small, because the rat that can carry the virus only lives in South America.
You might only become ill if you are in close contact with someone who has the Andes virus for a longer period of time.
